Our story

Precision Practical was born from the belief that schools shouldn’t be overcharged for science equipment that doesn’t meet the needs of learners and educators.

Founded by Robin and Ross — a secondary Head of Science and a Senior Technician — we’ve seen first hand how tight budgets are being wasted on kit that can't handle the daily rigours of the classroom. With a deep understanding of the national curriculum and over 3 decades of experience of school science education, we’ve set out to ensure our equipment facilitates teaching and enhances student understanding.

Instead of spending a lesson troubleshooting unreliable equipment we believe teachers should be able to focus on teaching, and students on learning! That’s why at Precision Practical we ensure our school science equipment is affordable, robust and designed with the student in mind.

Ross

Born on the southern coast of Victoria, Australia, Ross moved to London in his mid 20’s as a musician, where he made the tough decision to break up the band and study Molecular and Applied Bioscience at Westminster University in London. During his studies Ross gained a range of experience working as an ambassador for Kew Gardens, the Millennium Seedbank, the Science Museum and as a laboratory assistant for a PhD team.

After graduating in 2016 Ross took the role of Senior Science Technician at Oaklands School in East London. Here Ross has worked closely with fantastic teachers and teams of technicians, delivering learning focussed and functional practical resources for KS3, KS4 and A level.  Ross has honed his craft across a range of lab bases and fieldwork activities as well as science clubs and open events. He has also been instrumental in the redesign and construction of new school laboratories.

Robin

Robin’s journey began with a dual fascination: the vast mysteries of the natural world and the imaginative possibilities of science fiction. This led him to Bristol University to study Astrophysics, but it was a stint teaching English in Barcelona that sparked a lifelong interest in education.

After returning to the UK and moving to London, Robin has spent over a decade at the front of the classroom, serving as a Science Teacher, Head of Physics, and leading a large secondary school science department.

Precision Practical is the result of his time in classroom labs, and all the frustrations and troubleshooting that it entails! With a vision born from a desire to create the high-quality, reliable equipment that he always wished he had for his own students. He believes that when the equipment works perfectly, the science truly comes to life.
